“Remember what I said about the detective’s curse? Solution to my whole life was right under my nose that woman, those kids and I was watching everything else. See, infidelity is one kind of sin, but my true failure was inattention.” —Hart
I’m obsessed with True Detective, and I’ve been reading a lot of the synopses and theories out there. Lots of people have thought that we are seeing signs that Hart’s daughter Audrey is heading towards tragedy, but so far no one seems to have commented on the fact that all signs point to her already being the victim of sexual abuse.
We see her as a young pre-pubescent girl drawing inappropriate pictures, and acting out what looks like a gang rape scene with dolls. That combined with her teenaged rebellion, drinking, and having sex with two older guys all point to a sexual trauma in her childhood.
Her dad, who shot a guy in the head for hurting children, and who is supposed to be tuned-in to clues, apparently misses these repeated overtures for help from his own daughter.
The spiral picture and Cohle’s lone star tin men link Audrey Hart’s sexual abuse with the Yellow King and the murder. I haven’t figured out how it all connects yet, but I do think a big clue really has been Under Hart’s nose all along.
